Local reports said on Thursday that LG’s next flagship smartphone LG G5 will likely feature an iris scanner. According to the reports, the LG G5 which is slated to release in the first half of next year will come with iris recognition technology developed by IRIENCE, a Korea-based firm specialized in biometrics.

The local reports said IRIENCE has completed the development of a hardware module for the iris recognition technology which will be equipped to the LG G5 and is currently upgrading its algorithm process including increasing the recognition range from around 30 cm to 50 cm. The company said it would take two or three months to get the job done.

It is expected that the iris scanner will enable LG G5 users to use a wide variety of biometric technologies on the market. In particular, the feature will strengthen the security in the mobile banking transactions as the iris recognition technology is known to be far superior to finger scanning technology in terms of uniqueness and immutability.

Market watchers see that LG Electronics is focused on the iris recognition technology in order to differentiate itself from bigger rivals like Samsung Electronics and Apple in the competition of the application of biometrics to smartphones as LG has been falling behind of them in the mainstream finger printing scanning technology.
