The 1Q earnings results for major game developers was released. Mobile game companies such as Netmarble Games, Com2uS, and Webzen came out strong, while web board game companies like NHN Entertainment and Neowiz Games were hit hard by stringent regulations.

Nexon topped the sales list with Dungeon Fighter, Maplestory, Sudden Attack, and FIFA Online 3. Nexon posted sales at 479 billion won, operating profit at 204.8 billion won, current net profit at 170.9 billion won.

Netmarble Games took 2nd place beating NC Soft. Netmarble reached a record high performance with sales of 203.4 billion won, operating profit at 51 billion won, buoyed by sustained growth of Seven Knights, Taming Monster, and Blue Marble. Its latest mobile game ‘Raven’ ranked top in the Google Play Store sales category. NC Soft was pushed back to the third position despite Lineage’s strong performance of and Blade & Soul’s major hit in Taiwan. It posted sales at 188.1 billion won and operating profit at 44.9 billion won. NC Soft is trying to restore its market position with its new mobile and online games set to be launched in the second half of the year.

Com2uS reached the highest sales ever since its foundation with sales revenue at 93.7 billion won and operating profit at 35.6 billion won on the back of strong growth in mobile games driven by the solid performance of Summoners War, The God of Fishing, Golf Star, and Soul Seeker. Gamevil hit the highest overseas sales revenue with 17.3 billion won taking up 47% of its total sales. It posted combined sales revenue at 35.6 billion won and operating profit at 1.5 billion won with its competitive games like Gamevil Dragon Blaze, Zenonia S, and Million Author. It also plans to set up a European branch in the first half of next year.

Webzen came out as the fastest growing game developer with annual growth rate of 2070% with operating profit at 7.9 billion won, after signing IP partnership contract with its Chinese partner on MU: Origin. Analysts expect its 2Q earnings to grow further with MU: Origin taking the 2nd position in Google Player Store sales category and 1st position in T Story sales list.

The industry was hit hard by new web board gaming restrictions. NHN Entertainment announced operating loss of 13.8 billion won despite sales revenue at 138.1 billion won. Neowiz Games posted sales at 48.1 billion won, operating profit at 7.8 billion won.

One industry source said the mobile gaming industry led the overall growth of the entire industry, but the growth of PC based online games will be challenging.
