Now the energy left in electric vehicle batteries or ESS can be sold back to the grid. The electricity produced with by-product gas at steel mills will be traded in the over the counter market. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced ‘the Major Challengers of Power Trading Market to Revitalize New Energy Industry’ on March 12 as it introduces new policies on ‘micro’ renewable energy trading.

It enables drivers to charge their batteries during nighttime at lower rates to sell it back at higher prices during the daytime peak hours. For EVs with 10kW on-board chargers can pay the utilities bill deducting the power left from the power charged to their batteries.

However, MOTIE is expected to develop extra built-in type chargers for EVs to help support the fledgling V2G technology. At the same time, MOTIE is working with KEPCO, Hyundai-Kia Motors, Seoul National University, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, and others to built V2GG testing labs while talking about the relevant measures and rate systems.

MOTIE will allow ESS to store and sell the power back to the grid at KEPCO. It will also introduce customized lower rate electricity at night. MOTIE has loosened up the regulations in the OTC market introducing annual contract conditions instead of spot trade.
